Antwerp Zoo is located in the middle of the city and is one of the oldest (1843) and most beautiful zoos in Europe. In order to maintain this reputation, it was decided at the beginning of 2007 to expand the zoo. The zoo grew by 10% with an African savannah, among other things.

The zoo has departments from different parts of the world. For example, 'Vriesland' is the home for king and rock penguins and sea otters, in 'Hati Mahal' you see the elephants and in Aquaforum there is a daily sea lion show. In this zoo you will also find a swamp biotope ('Hippotopia') with Dalmatian Pelicans, hippos and tapirs. You can also walk through an aviary where ibis fly around.

In total there are more than 5000 animals spread over almost 1000 species. Add to that the special trees and the beautiful landscaping and it is not surprising that the Antwerp Zoo is one of the most important attractions in Belgium. The zoo attracts about one and a half million visitors a year.

The Antwerp Zoo plays an important role in the conservation and breeding of endangered species such as the okapi, the Przewalski horse, the Congo peafowl, the dwarf chimpanzee, the golden eagle and the European otter. In Antwerp there are several nice attractions for the whole family, of which Antwerp Zoo is definitely the best.
