The Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) in Prague used to be the city's commercial centre. A large market was held here, but death sentences were also carried out. In 1621, 27 Protestants were beheaded at the same time. Nowadays things are much more peaceful: on the square there are many terraces to relax after visiting the many beautiful sights in Prague.

The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings and some of the best sights in Prague. In the façade of the Old Town Hall you can see the famous Astronomical Clock, which not only shows the time but also the days and the moon phase. Every hour two small doors open and Jesus appears, followed by his apostles. On the side are a miser, a Turk with a turban and a vain man, all shaking their heads. A skeleton (representing death) holds an hourglass and rings the bell. After the chimes, a golden rooster cries. One warning: when tourists are watching the spectacle, pickpockets often make their move!

The Old Town Hall is open for visits. You'll see a Gothic council chamber but the highlight of a visit is the ascent of the tower. Opposite the Old Town Hall is the Church of Our Lady before Týn with its characteristic towers. Between the towers you can spot a sculpture of the Virgin Mary. Inside you can see beautiful baroque paintings above the main altar.
