Hungarian Railway Museum

On the former site of the Central Workshops of the Hungarian Railways (Magyar Vasúttörténeti Park), train enthusiasts can indulge themselves. This is the largest open-air park in Europe for historic trains with more than 100 locomotives and wagons. Are you looking for great attractions for the whole family? Then visit the Railway Museum! The centre is formed by the locomotive halls where locomotives are placed in a circle. This circle could turn and so a locomotive could be directed to the right depot.

You can see a steam locomotive from 1870 and the legendary Árpád that covered the distance from Budapest to Vienna in 1934 at the then incredible time of three hours. The showpiece of the collection is a wooden dining car from the Orient Express.

The nice thing about this museum is that you can not only admire the old trains, but you can also take a short ride with some of them. For example, a diesel train runs between the museum and the Nyugati (West) Station. There the royal waiting room of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) was restored to its former glory. There is also a simulator in the museum: you can feel for yourself what it is like to drive a powerful locomotive.

The large model railway is not to be missed. You can also operate them yourself from a wagon of the Hungarian Post Office.

Several historic trains run in Hungary. From Budapest you can take a ride to the Danube Bend. From Keszthely near Lake Balaton, historic trains run to Badacsony and the fortified town of Sümeg.
