Museo Poldi-Pezzoli

This museum in Milan has a collection based on the private collection of Gian Giacomo Poldi-Pezzoli who started collecting art in the middle of the 19th century. Initially, these were only paintings and sculptures. Having seen jewellery, carpets, glass and porcelain in other European museums, Poldi-Pezzoli also began collecting them, mainly from the Renaissance and 18th century Venetian art.

The most famous work of art in this museum is 'Profile Portrait of a Young Lady' by Antonio del Pollaiolo, but there are also masterpieces by Botticelli, Bellini and Fra Filippo Lippi. There is also art by Dutch and Flemish artists such as Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jacob Toorenvliet and Willem Van Mieris.

After the death of Poldi-Pezzoli, Giuseppe Bertini became the first director of the museum. He expanded the collection considerably. Later on, private donations were added to the collection, providing the museum with historic clocks and sundials, as well as richly decorated lace and embroidery.

Within walking distance of the museum are several sights that are worth a visit for art lovers. Galleria d'Italia and Museo Teatrale alla Scala are recommended.
