The National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa (Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa) in Naples is an absolute must for railway enthusiasts, especially after the thorough renovation in 2006. The museum is housed on historical grounds, where the first Italian steam locomotive, the Bayard, was built in 1845. It is exhibited together with dozens of other locomotives, trainsets and train models.

You can also see the royal train (11 trainsets, built by Fiat), which were used in 1930 at the wedding of Umberto II of Savoy and the Belgian princess Marie José. Umberto II was the last king of Italy, but only for a period of 33 days in 1946. His father Victor Emanuel III had flirted with fascism during the Second World War and that was the downfall of the Italian royal family.

The museum is located along the Naples/Portici railway line, Italy's oldest railway line. This beautiful railway line takes you along the coast.
