Highlights

Padrão dos Descobrimentos / Monument of the Discoveries

In 1960 it was 500 years ago that Prince Henry the Navigator died. On the occasion of this, the Monument of the Discoveries was erected: a white stone monument in the shape of a ship's bow. In front is Henry himself, followed by King Manuel I, Vasco da Gama, cartographer Magellan, and a whole procession of other famous Portuguese, including the poet Luis de Camŏes. The only woman in the company is Philippa of Lancaster, Henry's mother and the brain behind the Portuguese voyages of discovery.

The monument itself is rather controversial, but inside is a very interesting exhibition: the Lisbon Experience. Every half hour, a multimedia performance starts on the history of Portugal and the role of Lisbon. From the first settlement to the Carnation Revolution. You can also take a lift to the top of the monument.

Outside, take a good look at the pattern on the square in front of the monument: it is a world map showing the Portuguese' voyages of discovery. Close to the Monument of the Discoveries there are more interesting sights in Lisbon, such as the Torre de Belém and Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Do you want to go cycling in Lisbon? Then this route is recommended, it is a flat and interesting route along the Tagus.
